　　范戴克是法蘭德斯畫家。早在 13、14 歲時，他便當上魯本斯﹙Rubens﹚的第一助手。對他而言，情念要比動態更能表現出他的主題，這正是他的長處。1620 年渡海赴英﹙英王詹姆斯一世﹝James I﹞有意任命他為御用畫家﹚，但四個月後便回到法蘭德斯。1621 年前往義大利，除了 1622 年因父親去世而去法蘭德斯以外，在義大利待了四年。他曾到羅馬、弗羅倫斯、威尼斯、巴勒摩，並在熱那亞長期逗留，在該地奠定了他從事肖像畫的基礎，並發展他在英國期間沿用不輟的造形潛力。

　　他作了許多出色的肖像畫，它們在個性的刻劃上雖不如魯本斯來得有力量，但對被畫者的特性有敏銳的掌握，他表現了一種永恆的格調，反應出他內在的憂鬱。他的宗教畫多模仿自魯本斯、提香﹙Titian﹚、科雷吉歐﹙Correggio﹚，然而他不似魯本斯一般成功地將這些影響一一融合吸收。

　　他在英國期間﹙1632 年至去世時﹚似乎相當成功，在英王查理一世的宮廷裡頗孚眾望，並受封為爵士，儼然是一位肖像畫大師，取代了前輩畫家米登斯﹙Mytens﹚，並遮掩了詹森﹙Johnson﹚的光芒。

　　他在英國九年間的作品相當不少，但一直重複熱那亞時代的式樣。他在英國時代所作的肖像畫中，最為有名的是查理一世的騎馬像、國王的三面肖像、皇家子弟的群像、威爾頓的全家福等。這些作品位英國肖像畫的偉大傳統創設了一個典範，經多布森﹙Dobson﹚、雷利﹙Lely﹚、雷諾茲﹙Reynolds﹚、根茲巴羅﹙Gainsborough﹚以至勞倫斯﹙Lawrence﹚，歷久不衰。
