　　維拉斯奎茲是葡裔的西班牙畫家，生於塞維爾。1613 年入塞維爾巴契各﹙Pacheco﹚繪畫學院，在此之前，他的習畫過程不詳；1617 年成為能獨當一面的畫家。1618 年與巴契各的女兒結婚。他的早期作品「聖母受胎」﹙Immaculate Conception﹚受巴契各著作的影響很大。他在塞維爾停留至 1622 年，前期的作品顯示他偏愛以自然主義的方式表現強光照射下的物體。1622 年訪馬德里。1623 年再訪馬德里並擔任宮廷畫家。

　　他的作畫速度不快，下筆謹慎，技巧考究，色調肅穆晦暗。許多肖像畫以簡單色彩作背景，使人物的輪廓浮現出來。因宮廷職務的關係，他很少有作宗教畫的機會 ﹙西班牙缺乏神話故事，因此很少任命他作宗教畫；只能利用幾次義大利之遊或偶而抽空作幾幅主題畫﹙Subject Pictures﹚他從西班牙皇家收藏的提香﹙Titian﹚作品中，獲得許多啟示。

　　1628 年魯本斯﹙Rubens﹚訪馬德里，委拉斯奎茲與之會面，雖然他的看法、個性及藝術修養與委拉斯奎茲截然不同，但是委氏仍然從魯本斯處獲益良多；此外他很少受到其他畫家的影響。不知是否因魯本斯的激勵，他才去義大利，至少也是因魯本斯的影響力才獲准成行。1629 年 8 月出發，旅跡熱那亞、威尼斯、羅馬及那不勒斯﹙在此遇見利貝拉〔Ribera〕﹚，於 1631 年返回馬德里。作品「酒鬼」(Topers，1629 年 7 月以前，為西班牙皇家收藏) 畫中人物個性，及靜物細節的描繪，顯出他受利貝拉的寫實主義很大的影響。在義大利所畫的主題畫﹙如「約瑟夫帶給雅克伯的上衣」〔Joseph's coat brought to Jacob〕；「伏爾肯的熔爐」〔Forge of Vulcan〕﹚則顯示他專注於男體和豐富多層次的色彩。義大利之行增廣了他的視野，但並未改變其寫實的本性。

　　他回國後所作的肖像畫，色彩極為鮮豔，是菲力普四世恐怖統治下，唯一幾個歡樂年頭的寫照，如：「菲力普四世像」﹙Philip IV，1644﹚，有一種類似魯本斯的豐富感。1648 年委拉斯奎茲伴隨使節團到義大利護送新后---奧國的瑪莉亞納﹙Marianna of Austria﹚，而重訪熱那亞、威尼斯、羅馬及那不勒斯，於 1651 年返回馬德里。此行的目的是為皇室收購新畫，期間並完成了幾件作品，如：「教宗英諾森十世肖像」﹙Pope Innocent X﹚，以及「維納斯的梳粧」﹙Venus at her Mirror﹚，這兩件作品都極為出色。1630 年代至 1640 年代，他作了一系列宮廷侏儒與皇子侍從的肖像畫。他所感興趣的是侏儒與皇家子弟玩伴的性格，以及如肖像想像畫「伊索」﹙Aesop﹚與「墨尼帕斯」﹙Menippus﹚中的老年人、皺紋、破衣，以及年事漸高而有病容的國王。

　　委拉斯奎茲死後，他的職位由幾位籍籍無名的外國畫家繼承，直到十八世紀晚期，才經蒙斯﹙Mengs﹚和提也波洛﹙Tiepolo﹚傳給哥雅﹙Goya﹚。
