The sensors will work through(通过) the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty(出毛病的) electrical appliances(电子设备), isolate them so that they cannot harm(危害) anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the firemen. It will also call the police, should the sensors detect an intruder(非法闯入者). You will open the door using your personal card--the one you use for shopping--maybe using a number known only to you.

2When John and Victoria Falls arrived in New York City for one-year stay, they did not bring very many things with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment(配备家具的公寓) or to buy used furniture(家具). But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting(出租) of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America's fastest growing businesses.

What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples(夫妻) - people whose job or business may force(迫使) them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent(租用) new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer(更喜欢) to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile(同时), they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford(买得起) to buy.

One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things.
