二、阅读理解

1    Some British and American people like to invite(邀请) friends and colleagues(同事) for a meal(进餐) at home. You should not be upset (心烦意乱) if your English friends don't invite you home. It doesn't mean they don't like you.

Dinner parties(宴会) usually start between 7 and 8 p.m., and end at about 11. Ask your hosts (东道主, 主人,主办人) what time you should arrive. It's polite(有礼貌的) to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle(瓶) of wine(葡萄酒) as a present(出席的, 到场的).

Do you want to be extra (特别地) polite? Say how much you like the room, or the pictures on the wall. But remember - not to ask how much things cost.

You'll probably start the meal with soup(汤), or something small as a "starter" (第一道菜), then you'll have meat or fish with vegetables(蔬菜), and then a dessert (甜食), followed by coffee. It's polite to finish everything on your plate(盘子, 碟) and to take more if you want it. Some people eat bread with their meal, but not everyone does.

Before they take out(拿出) their cigarettes(香烟) after the meal, most people usually ask, "Do you mind if I smoke here?"

Did you enjoy the evening? Call your hosts the next day, or write them a short "thank you" letter. Perhaps it seems funny to you, but British and American people say, "thank you, thank you, and thank you." all the time.

2       In the United States, it is not customary(习惯上) to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving(刮脸; 修面) or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter(事情) is very important and requires immediate attention(注意). The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes(猜想) it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates(通讯) its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend(倾向) to feel they are not highly regarded(尊重; 尊敬) if the invitation to a dinner party is extended(延长) only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered(受尊敬的) foolish(愚蠢的) to make an appointment(约会) too far in advance(预先, 事先) because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus( 因此), misunderstandings(误解, 误会) arise(发生) between people from different cultures that treat(对待, 看待) time differently. Promptness(敏捷) is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt(准时到达的), they may be regarded(留心的,关心的,表示敬意的) as impolite(不礼貌的;失礼的;粗鲁的) or not fully responsible(负有责任的, 需承担责任的). In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate(联合; 结交, 结伙) waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation(解释, 说明), though perhaps he will not complete the sentence(谈判).
