I'm sorry, but I really can't.

你向别人请求做一件事情，最渴望就是听到人家一口答应，义无反顾，不过世事又岂能尽如人意。假如你真的帮不上忙，至少也应该说明原因，I'm sorry, but I really can't. 对不起，但我实在不能做到。

"I'm sorry, but I really can't."这是一个非常有礼貌但又非常决绝的拒绝方式。你还可以说："I apologize, but I'm not able to"或是"I wish I could, but I can't."这都是百分之百完全拒绝人家的，如果你心里还想办法要帮人家的话，你还可以利用我们以前曾经教过的句子："I'll see what I can do." ‘让我看看我能为你做些什么。’

对话
A：Hey Elaine, would you please keep quiet?
B：I'm sorry, but I really can't. There's a cockroach.
C：Do you need a hand?
A：No, thanks. I got it.
甲：嘻，伊莲恩，请你安静一点好吗?
乙：对不起，我真不行。那里有一只蟑螂。
丙：你需要帮忙吗?　　
甲：不用了，谢谢。我已把它打死了。

答应和拒绝人家要求的用语前面讲过了，现在且说Would you please keep quiet?（请你安静点好吗？）这类句子。有时，觉得人家的行为难以忍受，你可以说：Would you please stop that?/Could you stop doing that?（别再这样做好吗？）或Must you continue doing that?（你还要继续这样做吗？）改用命令语气，则可说Stop it! / Knock it off! / Cut that out! / Give it a rest! 这都是‘别再这样了’的意思，有时可译做‘住手’或‘住嘴’。例如有人在你身旁不断用指头敲桌子，你就可以说：Cut that out! 或 Would you please stop beating the devil's tattoo? Tattoo是‘连续快速的鼓声’，beat the devil's tattoo即‘用指头或脚在桌子上或地板上不断的敲。’

要直接告诉人家‘你很讨厌’，可以说：You would try the patience of a saint. 或You really get my goat. Try这里不解作‘尝试’，而是‘考验’的意思，名词是trial（考验、审讯）；to try the patience of a saint是说‘圣人都难忍耐’，颇像中文的‘佛都有火’。至于to get one's goat，直译是‘取去人家的山羊’，这和‘讨厌’有什么关系呢？据说，从前参赛的马匹休闲时多有山羊作伴，夺去山羊，会令马匹烦躁不安，影响比赛成绩，这是当时不法赌徒常用的手法。He got my goat with his constant complaints. 即‘他不断抱怨，今我无名火起。’
