2. Where do I start?

  • Talk to the business owner to get what they really need/want.
    • Understand the expectations? what are you hoping to get out of this? why do you want this project? what's going to achieve? what's the scope?
    • Validate Interest? why do you think this is a good idea? how is going to help your business? what's going to do for the business?
    • Ensure business management support it. to make sure the business owner boss support it. 
    • Quantify the pain. 
  • Find a subject matter expert and validate that what the business owner really wants, which is logical, realistic, and appropriate based on the current environment. 
    • may not be the business owner
    • seek support from SME(subject matter expert), business owner
    • validate reality
    • look for alternatives
    • look for existing solutions 
  • Define the project vision/Business Plan. what it is we're hoping to accomplish. Usually it's done by the business owner but they would like to get you doing it and review it. 
    •  High level only. Eureka moment: a good idea to make our organization better. 
    • Develop the business case
    • Serves as the Foundation for the Project Charter. to Create a project charter which oulines the scope, objectives, and participants of the project. to list the cost, benefit, risk, vision. 
  • Validate the objective. 
    • 24 hour cooling off period, Please wait a 24 hour to make decision.
    • Now that it's in writing does it still make sense. how would I improve/tweak it? we'are going to present this to senior management.
    • 360 degree validation. bring in other people not just SME, talk to the people who is going to interface to the system. and validate that we have the best most compelling, project proposal, before it goes to senior management. 
  • Ensure there's support. Let's run it up the proverbial flagpole. Let's talk to the business owner to get the support.

  • Define the Approach. how are we going to deliver it? What methodology are we going to use? to ensure that we have posibility to success. 
    • Methodology (Traditional VS Agile). Traditional: PMI where we do initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controling and closing. Agile/ Iterative approach: or Hybrid approach. where we are gonig to some upfront analysis and design.
