Review of Sanoba Witch
Regarding that it could be a burden of soul to visit CLANNAD, Doki Doki Literature Club! and Saya no Uta in a row, I chose to to dilute these depressing contents with something relaxing. For one thing, I would love to check one more work from currently popular developer Yuzusoft for more objective discussion; for another, it was my non-galgame-fan friend mentioning Mlle Nene Ayachi that had simulated my interest to visit Sanoba Witch.
Probably unbeknownst to some blind fans of excessively discussed Senren * Banka (or should I say "Sengen * Banshin" ?), Sanoba Witch is the real origin of famous "Ciallo" meme. Overall, it is another upper-middle class of game from my point of view, BUT can surely beat Senren * Banka with its "better than none" message spreading about "skill wielding". However, I was unable to give any unbiased appraisal other than distain at the very beginning.
It was from my first impression of Nene and a later discussion with my friend about character design, which could be concluded as a two-step process from Trait Determination to Personality Complementation. We firstly choose some keywords of personality and then associate them with rational background setting. From this point of view, an outstanding story properly chooses traits and organizes them well. On the contrary, character design of low-cost eromanga are often scaling 1 to 10 in orthogonal dimensions, producing Array-like Character.
Fairly speaking, the storytelling of Nene Route is even beyond acceptable (but with a puzzling ending) and I actually appreciate Nene's independence and her "feeling responsible for others" in Nene Restart. She could have been at the level with Kyou Fujibayashi and Erica if the script writer had not put "pervert" into the fundemental traits of her and binded them violently with "magical worldview" (sadly Array-like). Therefore, the Route is still half-decent and, regarding that the routes of other heroines are even defective in logic, the entire game is still far from satisfactory.
Honestly I am disappointed, mainly for its lame message spreading. Perhaps I should have learned to set no expectation for Yuzusoft work on this aspect but I am especially curious about anything related to interpersonal skills. As suggested by my Saddle Model 2.0, I would always choose Knowledge rather than Skill while it seems impossible. Checking some relavant works for inspiration might be interesting then.
Why do I detest skills ? Actually I mean those on the exact opposite of those real things based on Knowledge, therefore those fake as distortion of real feelings. There is always someone wielding Skills against real feelings in order to achieve personal purpose. It is probably better to say I am detesting evil purposes which are well-disguised by Skill rather than the forms to accomplish purposes. To take M. Torvald Helmer from Et Dukkehjem as an example, we could not judge the essence of those lovey-dovey until lady Nora unveiled his irresponsibility.
Despite both for a good purpose, things could diverge into different directions as well. Real "Good Skills" are experience-like manners of action, which are radically based on Knowledge about the objects we are oriented to. Those who deliberately learn Skills from external sources may be guilty of ignoring the specificity of his/her situation. It always makes me feel uncomfortable to discuss on interpersonal problems with the unfamiliars, which was actually a consequence of the discussion vide supra. Once we want a Skill to be "universal", it definitely lacks efficacy to solve personal problem in the meantime. It also encourages us always to solve problems as the case may be.
p.s. Thanks M. Famishin for my looping his Koiseyo Otome! <Piano Version> during my typing.
