Review of Metro Exodus

Setting aside the creepy spiders on my screen (mask of Artyom) and the hell of maggots (leeches and worms, I know) in the final chapter, playing Metro Exodus was quite an experience for me. The storytelling was extraordinary, extraordinary about responsibility and the inheritance of it but, for me, with one flaw in its Karma System.

Karma, or Sanskrit karman, implies the casual law in Indian philosophy where one's good or bad actions are regarded as determination of future to encourage kindness. Such karma-like systems are common in current cyber games to encourage players' involvement and NPC interactions. Taking Final Fantasy Ⅻ Remake as an example, your later costume acts as a reward or retaliation for your previous merc job. However, we are returning to the basic definition here, that is, if you execute surrenders or stand idly by the grievance and oppression, you will be punished in the future: people on Aurora fail to save you from death.

To be honest, the design of blood transmission is quite delicate. Via member loss at the end of each chapter, too much evil result in lack of blood donor and tragedy ending. But my question is, why member loss? I was the one who slaughtered, so why Duke died and Alyoshia wounded? And even more puzzling, why Damir left in Caspian?

I have never imagined that Damir could stay on Aurora until I read some comments about Karma System after finishing the main story. For me, it seemed that he just chose to stay there with Guil and shoulder "that war of his". Could it actually be a punishment of mine? How could it be?

I value "decision" highly, especially the free will behind decisions. My will is free, therefore, I can make decisions for myself. In the sametime, true freedom advocator respect the freedom of others and the balance to respect the decision of others has always been my pursuit of life. I was just... confused at the departure of Damir, deeming it as a failure in design.

Anyway, fortunately I did not lost Duke and Alyoshia in my first walkthrough and reached the good ending. Anna is quite an excellent sniper and a lovely girl of support for our Artyom as well. Luckily I did not get her end up in furious alone, lol.
