科举制度虽然因清末的停废而走下了中国历史的大舞台,但是其公开考试、公平竞争、择优录取的合理内核，已经超越了帝制时代的显著特征，具有了现代性。时至今日，无论是在中国还是世界各国，对公平、公正精神的无限渴望，对于通过公平竞争以实现精英治理模式的不解追求，以及在以考试作为选拔、测评人才的最重要手段得到充分运用的大背景下,科举制度的合理价值仍然适应于现代社会。
我们坚信，全面、准确认识科举制度在$1300$年发展历程中蕴含的合理价值，能加深我们对博大精深的中华文化的认识，能激发中华民族的自豪感和自信心，能成为展现中国传统文化深厚软实力的重要内容,进而能为科举作为中国的“第五大发明”赋予新的时代意涵。
Although the imperial examination system of feudal China was dismantled in late Qing dynasty and thus stepped off the arena of history, its modernity in public exams to all, equal opportunities and high selectiveness by merit has surpassed its era. Even till now in modern China and other countries throughout the world where fairness and selection of social elites by equal opportunities are still yearned for, and where examinations are still the essential means to select and assesstalents, some of the goals and values of the imperial examination system still apply.
We are strongly convinced that a clear and overall research of the positive influence of the imperial examination system in its development of $1,300$ years, can deepen our understanding of the profound Chinese culture, strengthen our national pride and confidence, demonstrate cultural softpower, and furthermore, give this civil service examination system a new meaning as China's Fifth Great Invention” after compass, gunpowder, papermaking and woodblock printing.
