tar GNU
tar
operations
Exactly one of eight operations is both allowed and required for any instance of using tar
. Users may not specify more than one operation.
The Frequently Used Operations
- ‘--create’
- ‘-c’
- Create a new
tar
archive. - ‘--list’
- ‘-t’
- List the contents of an archive.
$ tar --list --file=bfiles.tar --wildcards '*b*'
- ‘--extract’
- ‘-x’
- Extract one or more members from an archive.
- ‘--delete’
- Deletes members from the archive.
- ‘--update’
- ‘-u’
- Adds files to the end of the archive, but only if they are newer than their counterparts already in the archive, or if they do not already exist in the archive.
Two Frequently Used Options
- ‘--file=archive-name’
- ‘-f archive-name’
- Specify the name of an archive file.
- ‘--verbose’
- ‘-v’
- Show the files being worked on as
tar
is running. - ‘--bzip2’
- ‘-j’
- This option tells
tar
to read or write archives throughbzip2
. - ‘--absolute-names’
- ‘-P’
- Normally when creating an archive,
tar
strips an initial ‘/ - ’ from member names. This option disables that behavior.
- ‘--gzip’
- ‘--gunzip’
- ‘--ungzip’
- ‘-z’
- This option tells
tar
to read or write archives throughgzip
, allowingtar
to directly operate on several kinds of compressed archives transparently.
