Glenn Doman Method – How Does it Work?

Glenn Doman the founder of the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential has been developing ways for a number of years in which children and infants can be taught at an early age. He works with both normal healthy children, and children who suffer from a brain injury. He believes that teaching children from an early age and within the first five years of their lives can greatly help increase their IQ.

The Glenn Doman method has been adopted in the form of flashcards for both reading and mathematics. The flashcards are available for purchase, but can also be made at home. If you hop online you can find instructions on how to make fun and easy flashcards for your child’s learning at home. Making the flashcards can be a fun project for both the parents and the children.

The Glenn Doman method has been proven to work by many parents who have used it. Parents who have not used this method, but have used other means of teaching their children from early years might have noticed that they learn a lot faster than if they were first taught reading at a much later age.

So how does the Glenn Doman method work? The flashcards are called “Bit off Intelligence cards” or “Bits” for short. These consist of large cards with pictures on the front, and information pertaining to that information at the back. They help stimulate infants and children of any age would love working, and learning from them. Working daily with your child in a fun and relaxing manner will really help to increase your child’s learning ability and knowledge.

Here are some things to keep in mind when working with the bits. The flashcards in each set of bits should be on the same subject. The pictures should be large and precise. There should be one picture on each card without any background. The presentation should be short; normally one second per card. This means that the cards should be shown quickly and only one fact per card should be given at a time. To make sure that your child will not get bored of the cards, stop showing them the cards when you notice their attention dwindling. Remember learning should never be forced otherwise it will just become less fun, and less result oriented.

Another point to keep in mind is to have the presentations only when your child is in a happy receptive mood. Do not attempt at teaching them if they are tired, sick, or cranky. Do not force bits upon your child and make sure that you too are in a happy mood when you make the presentation. This will result in a fun environment for learning, and your child will enjoy learning. If your child has learnt all the flashcards in one set then make sure you make new ones for them so that they are constantly learning something new.

A Glenn Doman method has also been introduced for mathematics. This method is called the dot method. We have all gotten used to using numbers to learn mathematics but according to Glenn Doman there is no need for this long and difficult method. He believes that children are born with the ability to discern the quantity of objects. This means at a glance they can figure out how many objects are present. If we do not help our kids develop this ability, then they might lose it by the time they start school. In this method, you use flashcards, but instead of pictures or numbers, you put dots on the cards, and increase the number of dots as you go along and your child keeps learning. You can first get them accustomed to quantities, and then to equations of those quantities, and so on. By doing equations in dots, children understand how to do problem solving in mathematics as opposed to memorizing formulas. Once you have worked with them using dots, you can introduce numbers, and they will still try doing complicated equations.

The Glenn Doman method has been known to work with the parents who have tried it with their children, and written about it. However, you must always remember that each child is different, and has their own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning, so you have to adopt a style that is suitable to their specific style.
