Introduction:
This is a story about a boy named Alex. In the last 19 years in his life, he was told he ought to listen to his parents because he was not mature and experienced enough to control his own life. Lacking essential communication with his parents, he often felt not understood and suffered from inner conflict. Distressed and frustrated, he is wondering if he could ever let the real “Me” fly. Let’s step into Alex’s story.
Characters: Alex and his parents, Friend 1 and Friend 2.
Scene 1
characters: Alex and Mom
[When Alex is 10, he and his mom are passing by a musical instruments shop, Alex being attracted by the person who is playing a piano.]
Alex: Wow! How elegant the music is! Mom, can I learn to play the piano too?
Mom: I'm afraid not. You are too young to know what is the best for you. You are supposed to pay more attention to your school work, instead of sparing your time on these useless things.
Alex: But many of my classmates have taken a piano courses. And I'm really interested in it.
Mom: Have you forgotten your dream? You said your dream university is the Peking University, the best university in China! And The only way to realize it is to work harder than your peers.
Alex: I will spend only my spare time on piano and will not cut down my time on study. If you take me to the piano course, by no means will I fall behind in my study (anxiously)
Mom: I remember that you only got ninety five in your last math test while your good friend Tom got one hundred. Why don't you put more energy into your math learning?
Alex: OK, I see...I'll study harder. (lower his head)
Mom: That is what you should do!
Scene 2
characters: Alex and Mom
[When Alex is 16, he is faced with the separation of Sciences and Arts.]
Mom: Give me your final exams paper.
Alex: Here.
Mom: Fine. Your physics, chemistry and biology test scores are all well. I hear that it's high time that you should decide whether to choose arts or sciences. Which one is your favorite?
Alex: Em, I think physics might be a little little more(too) hard and boring for me and I prefer those liberal lessons…(lift up head and glance at mom's sour-face and quickly stop talking) Em, I don't really know…which one do you prefer?
Mom: Were I you, I would choose sciences without delay. You know, the jobs of sciences are commonly considered more high-paid than those of arts.
Alex: OK, I see...You know, I actually want to choose sciences at first, too.
Mom: Wise choice! You should know that as your Mom I will never do harm to you! You are still too young to make significant choice for your life. Current high score does not mean that you don't need to work hard in the future. Bear your dream in your mind! You ought to enter the Peking University!
Alex: OK.
Scene 3 character: Alex and Mom
[When Alex is 18 and has finished the national college entrance examination, he and his mom are checking his final score.] Mom: Let me have a look. Wow! seven hundred and fifteen scores! I think you are certain to be accepted by the Peking University.
Alex: Yes, I realize my dream.
Mom: OK, let me choose your major. (Alex looked at her and moved his lips, seemingly say something. but finally said nothing at all.) What about the Guanghua School of Management in Peking University? I have searched on the Internet. There are many good learning resources and well-known teachers in this school. And you can get high-paid job after graduation more easily. I know you'd love this major!
Alex: OK, as your wish. It sounds nice. Mom: Of course. Many famous financiers have studied in this school. You know, the good connections(人脉关系)is very important in China. You might get many opportunities in this school. I will help you to fill your college application. Listen to me my boy! You are still not mature enough to decide you path of life!
Alex: Fine. (indifferent)
Scene 4: In the University
Characters: Alex, friends.
[The first term has come to an end and Alex gets used to studying in this area. But Alex is not sure whether he likes this major. Instead, he had some lessons from Department of Chinese Language and Literature and enjoyed the classes. At the end of the first term, Alex and his 2 friends go out for dinner, during which they have a chat about their experience and dream.]
(During the dinner)
Friend 1: How time flies! There comes the end of this semester and we will go home to celebrate the Spring Festival (excited). I have really enjoyed the past several months! Having learned more about finance and management, I am determined to move on and be a financier. Next year I want to engage in the financial program and continue to improve myself (full of confidence and expectation).
Friend 2: I totally agree with you! I have been dreaming of studying in the Guanghua School of Management for years! And it still seems like a dream to me even though I have been here for a long period of time. Economic management is not easy, but it does interest me and I am always eager to learn more. Though my parents are physicians, I found myself addicted to business and finance. Thus, I will prove that I can achieve my dream and master my own life.
Friend 1: Sounds great! What about you, Alex? You are one of the top students in the class! Tell us why do you study economic management and what is your future plan?
Alex: I…I don't know…Maybe… (reluctant)
Friend 2: That's alright, Alex. But I suppose everyone should find a reason to push themselves forward when they are faced with enormous trouble… (pat Alex's shoulder)
(Back in the dormitory)
[Alex cannot fall asleep. He is woken up by the chat tonight. Looking back at the life before, suddenly he realizes that he has never lived for himself. Never has he made any decision on his own for his "immaturity". It seems that his life is just a schedule drafted by his parents…But he ought to take responsibility for his own life! But what could he do? Will his parents ever listen to his idea? Could he have a chance to choose the path of the life? Tossing and turning, he suffers from insomnia.]
[Next morning, Alex wakes up with dark circles.]
Friend 1: Alex! What's wrong with you? You look exhausted! (surprised)
Alex: I have been thinking about my life for the whole night. In the past 18 years I used to listen to whatever my parents order me to do, from picking up interests to choosing my major. I still remember me trying to communicate with them about my own thoughts but they kept telling me that I am too young to make those essential decisions (sigh). I don't want to let them down so I always follow their order and hide the real "me". But I want to change this situation or I might regret sooner or later.
Friend 2: I understand. Why not try to have a proper and formal talk with your parents? Just tell them you don't want to make them worry but you hope you could lead to a joyful and fulfilling life that suits your own taste. (encouraging)
Alex: I know…Still I wonder whether they will accept my proposal or not…
Friend 1: Just go for it! Unless you try, you will never know the outcome. What about having a conversation this winter vacation?
Alex: You are right. Maybe you are right. I should give my real “me” a chance.
Scene 5: back to home
[Several days after Alex went back home, he and his parents are having dinner together. These days Alex seems to be absent-minded and he put down chopsticks early as usual.]
Alex: mom, I'm full.
mom: Hey, what’s wrong with you? These days you are really strange: you seem to be no appetite no matter what we prepare. Are you fall ill or you have some upset? (worried)
Alex: No, neither. In fact, I think there is something we need to talk seriously……These days, I often lose the direction when learning, even though it’s something not hard. It seems as I’ve lost my way, I didn’t know what’s the financial or management knowledge mean to me. In fact, I have never thought of being a business man or a banker. I just want to sit down and read an interesting book, you know. I’m always addicted to reading book since I’m a little boy, the charm of language really impressed me since I first read the book : how can such a sentence or just a word have this significant implication! So, emm... I am considering transfering to learn Chinese language, since their course really appeal to me.
Mom: Are you crazy? Give up your stupid idea on the count of three, three, two ,one...... Why you have such an amazing idea? You want to waste the all 18 years’ effort? If you do that, have you ever thought of the future? To be a writer or a researcher and struggle for live? All of us will never support you to do that! You should consider your future, you will have your own baby, you should take the responsibility to create better environment for him! If you do this, we will never give you any supports in the future!
Alex: What makes you think you’re so in control of what I do? I am already 18 years old, an adult! I can make my own decision and undertake all the responsibility! I can’t bear the boring knowledge anymore, that’s something I have to do! That’s none of your business, leave me alone! (go to the bedroom and lock the door)
The second day
Dad:(knocked at the door) Are you OK, now? I think we can have a formal communication since you are already clam down. It’s the deal between the men.
Alex: (open the door) dad, I’m really sorry for shouting at mom yesterday, but I’m really annoyed by what she said....... I’m really between a dilemma, and what mom said just like tar on fire....... I’m really frightened about the state and what it will be like in the future.
Dad: Don't worry about it too much, my boy. At this age, you are driven by the desire to be in charge of your own life while you still hesitate to choose your path. During your childhood, the influence of the surroundings is infinitely amplified. We don’t know what you want to be in the future, maybe a scientist, astronomer or a banker. All of our monitoring or forcing are to help you go through this difficult stage, and we just want you not to struggle to make ends meet in the future: have a stable income, a house, and a happy family, that’s enough. We just want to help you to do the best choice and keep the right of making the choice of what you really want to be. This is our first time as parents, you are our son, and we love you. But now it seems that we have made some mistakes----We lacked necessary communication to know about your idea, making decisions for you regardless of what you really want. Having listened to your thoughts, we come to realize that you are already mature enough to hold the rudder of your life. However, as an undergraduate, you still lack enough experience, so feel free to ask us for help and we will try our best to help you find out the best way to deal with problems and reach for success.
Alex: (hug)Thank you for your understanding, Dad. I really appreciate your care and selfless love for me. With your support, I will be full of confidence to face the difficulty in the future! As for my major, maybe I can try the double degree?
Dad: That’s awesome! If you do that, both of us will be proud of you. No matter what you choose to do, you should remember: hard work is the key to success, your mom and I will always be with you!
[One day of the next term, Alex is talking with his parents on the phone]
Alex:(calling), mom, this week I make an extremely good presentation for my English class! I was so nervous when reciting the passage but it turned out to be great. English used to be my worst subject and I was never brave enough to deliver a speech in front of class, but now I make it!
Mom: Congratulations! I always believe you can make it no matter how difficult it is. How about your intern as a Chinese teacher this week, which you told me last week?
Alex: Oh, students are really naught, but I tried to communicate with them and understand their idea, it’s really interesting, the vivid imagination really impressed me. After the ice breaking period, the work turned out to be interesting, it really fit me.
Dad: We’re really proud of you to make such a great progress. The communication and understanding is essential to maintain good relationship, this is what we’ve learnt from you.
Alex: I totally agree with you. With communication we are sure to form a harmonious atmosphere and improve together. And I really appreciate your comprehension. Oh, my students dialed me, maybe he needs my help. I have to hang up, bye bye.
Dad: Good luck for you!
Conclusion
Now this is the end of Alex’s story. As we all agree, communication and understanding are best tools to resolve conflicts and reach a consensus. And when it comes to family members, they work as well. Sometimes we might encounter with problems like Alex and his parents. What should we bear in mind is that most of the times they don’t mean to hurt us. Have a proper talk to let them know your real thoughts. Keep in mind that it is communication and love that make the real “Me” fly!
