By default all the cells in a sheet are protected when you ‘lock the sheet’. So you need to start by un-protecting all the cells.

Begin by selecting all the cells and then selecting ‘Format Cells’ from the right click menu

Select all cells and choose Format Cells

Then select the ‘Protection’ tab and uncheck the ‘Locked’ checkbox

Uncheck locked for all cells

Then select only the cells you want to protect and repeat the process, only this time turn the ‘Locked’ attribute back on

Select cells you want to protect

Apply locked to selected cells

Finally… select the ‘Protect Sheet’ option from the Review ribbon, enter a password and Voila, your selected cells are protected.
