Classification Data Material

The classification data is used when searching for materials. The characteristic values into the classes for each material can be used to search for material with that set of characteristics.

Class Type

The classification entry screen after the basic data entry allows information to be entered into user-defined characteristics and classes that can be assigned to a material.

The class type is a grouping that is predefined in SAP, for example class type 032 for release strategy. When class is created, it is assigned to a class type depending on its function.

Classes

After the class type has been chosen for the material, then individual classes can be selected. These classes have been set up in order to group together characteristics that describe the material further than do the fields in the Material Master.

Characteristics

The characteristics are the lowest level of the classification structure. Information or a value is entered in the characteristic level.

The characteristic can be configured to accept certain values or range of values, and entry can be mandatory (select “Entry required” option) or optional by using transaction CT04.

For example, this is a characteristic for purchasing groups which will be used for release strategy configuration.

If the multiple values indicator is selected then more than one value allowed for this characteristic (mean, more than one value can be assigned to a characteristic).

How to create the Material Master with classification view

1. Classification view must be activated for material type. Using transaction OMS2 to configure material type and select classification view.

2. Characteristic must be created or maintained by using transaction CT04.

3. Maintain class by transaction CL02 (Create new class via CL01). For example, Class type 001 – Material class, assign the characteristics to the Class.

4. Create material master (or extend classification view) via transaction MM01, create the material master by selecting the Classification view, maintain the class maintained and the characteristic values.
