What's the Social Software?
There are many definitions in website. I list some of them here:
Matt Jones:"Social software = software that's better because there's people there"
Clay Shirky:"Social software treats triads of people differently than pairs" (on the idea that, polygon-count like, social systems can be broken down to triangles, but no further) or "Social software treats groups as first-class objects in the system.", meaning that IM that only works point-to-point doesn't count, but 3-way or more IM does.
Lee LeFever :Where normal software links people to the inner workings of a computer or network, social software links people to the inner workings of each other's thoughts, feelings and opinions.
All of them talk about one thing, people is the basic data model here. If let me give a simple description about Social Software, I will say, it is a tool(website) where we can interact with somebody who is a friend of my friend(or more middle friend relationship), or whose something is I am very interesting in.
What Social Software can do?
Just like my description for it in the above, there are two key functions:
1. Link someone knowen by someone
Example: www.linkedin.com. In this website If you want to be a user, you need be recommend by registerd user. Users privode their info like profession, expertdomain and hobbies. After you search somebody by some keywords, you can find your relationship by the visual path between you and him.
Assumed that everybody in the world are in the site, you can be a friend with anyone in the world by a visual path which don't exceed 6 people. This is called Six Degree Separate Space.
2. Link someone known by something
Example: del.icio.us User can not only add bookmark here, but also can look somebody who has the same bookmark, sequentially can find more resouce from this people.
How Webex Connector can act as a Social Software?
In my opinion, Webex Connector is an IM tool. So far there are many popular tools like QQ, ICQ, MSN, YahooMessager etc. How can our product win? I think we need give some speical features, for example, how about we implement the feature like www.linkedin.com , we let connector users input some keywords as their attributs, then other people can find people by keyword and furthermore find the visual path between them.
Or we can simulate del.icio.us. We let connector users publish some topics, then we list all users who are instersting about it. They can talke about it together, or launch a webex meeting.
GIS (Geography Infromation System) with Social Software
I saw a very interesting Social Software, named Trepia, can locate a user. So I think our webex connector will be very powerful if we combine GIS with it.
Think it about, Tom want to play badminton, but he know nobody in this city (Maybe he just move here for not a long time). So he open the webex connector and find people whose hoppy is playing badminton, and by GIS function he can find someone who is very nearby him so that he can invite them.
