Drupal6 dont work by apt-get on my ubuntu 10.04,so get the drupal 7.12 form government official,and install as it says.
If you get an error "Table variable already exists." when you are trying to connect to the MySQL database.
It will be that the contents are not in the right path or folders.
In /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default you'll find where the "web server's document root" is.
