kernel: manages all the physical resources of the computer.
- File systems and structures.
- Device management,such as storing data to the hard disk.
- Process management or CPU functions.
- Memory management.
virtual memory operating system: enable execution of programs as if more memory is available than physcially exists in RAM.
Programs reside on the hard disk. When you execute a program, a copy of the programs loads into virtual memory. Portions of the program are copied into RAM during the actual execution process.
