–Do not take responsibility for results other than their own
–More comfortable and less risky
–Strong, clearly focused leader

•Teams
–Individual and mutual accountability
–Collective work-products to produce something of incremental performance value and that requires a real work contribution from each team member
–More flexible, higher levels of performance
–More risk
–Shared leadership roles
–Specific team purpose and performance metrics

•A team is a small number of people with complimentary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.

•Small Group (< than 10)
•Complimentary Skills (Technical/Functional, Problem Solving/Decision Making, Interpersonal)
•Common Purpose (Mission, Tone, Aspiration, “Solution Space”, Meaning, Emotional Energy, Identity)
•Performance Goals (Specific, Measurable, Track Progress, Facilitates Communication and Constructive Conflict, Focus, Levels the Field, Allow for Small Wins, and are Compelling)
•Common Approach – How to work together to accomplish their purpose (roles, schedules, decision making process, measurement, defining core team values, norms, rules of behavior, etc.)
•Mutual Accountability – Keeping promises to ourselves and others, commitment, and trust. Accountability provides a litmus test of the quality of a team’s purpose and approach.
