Unit1 Ending the meal and paying the check

Writing A restaurant meal

Writing a good clause

When you write in English, you should use a subject plus a verb in every clause. Though there are exceptions, this is a good rule of thumb.

I recently ate at a really cool restaurant.
We had drinks, appetizers, a main course and dessert.

In sentences with a main clause and a dependent clause, each clause needs a subject and a verb.

Move the text to the correct gap.

We recently ate at a new restaurant called Bim's. I ordered the T-bone steak.
I asked for mashed potatoes and a side of asparagus. It was wonderful! My friend got the lasagna.
As soon as we finished our main course, we ordered bread pudding and cappuccinos.
Both were excellent. Everything was delicious, so we'll probably go again. But first,
I have to go back on my low-carb diet.

Write about a restaurant meal you had recently. What did you eat? Was the food local or organic? Did you have dessert? Make sure that every clause has a subject followed by a verb. Type in the input box. Write 100-120 words. This activity is non-graded.

Mia and I recently ate a new restaurant called 1876.
I had called to make reservations, and the employee was very friedly.
She put us down for a 7 p.m. reservation. When we arrived, the place looked beautiful.
There were candles everywhere, and the server gave us a fantastic, free apptizer.
I ordered the asparagus quiche, and it came with a side of spicy corn on the cob.
It was unbelievable! As soon as we finished the main course,we both ordered the cheesecake brownie.
It was two desserts in one! the food was definitely noe low-fat,
but the chef said that it's mostly local and organic.Everything was delicious and unusual,
so we'll probably go again.

Anything else?

No, just the check, please.

This is on IXW.

You're our guest. We'll pay.

Well, if you insist.

I really appreciate it.

Paying the check

Before your check, or bill, is brought to the table, your server will ask if you are finished.

A: Would you like anything else?
B: No, thanks. Just the check.

You can also tell the server that you're ready to pay.

Could we have the check, please?

Use these expressions to offer to pay, and to thank someone else for paying:

A: The meal's on me.
B: That's very generous. I appreciate it.

Notice, in the following dialogue, how the man politely refuses, then finally accepts:

A: I'll take that.
B: You don't have to do that!
A: I insist. You're my guest.
B: Well, if you insist. Thanks very much.

Culture note: After a business meal, one party usually offers to pay. In more informal dinner situations, the bill may be split evenly, with one person doing the math and telling everyone what each owes. Sometimes, people will calculate and pay for the food each person ordered individually; or they might request a separate check when the order is placed. If you are not sure how the bill should be paid, you can ask.

A: So, how are we paying the check?	So, how are we paying the check?
B: How about we each pay for what we had?	How about we each pay for what we had?

A: Shall we split the bill equally?	Shall we split the bill equally?
B: Yeah, good idea.	Yeah, good idea.
A: That comes to, uh, 22 each.	That comes to, uh, 22 each.
