How to change your Twitter username

How to change your Twitter username

Your username –– also known as your handle –– begins with the “@” symbol, is unique to your account, and appears in your profile URL. Your username is used to log in to your account, and is visible when sending and receiving replies and Direct Messages. People can also search for you by your username.

Note: Your display name –– referred to as name –– is a personal identifier on Twitter and is separate from your username. It can be things like something playful, a business name, or a real name, and is displayed next to your username. You can update your name at any time.

Navigate to Settings and privacy and tap Account. Tap Username and update the username currently listed in the Username field. If the username is taken, you'll be prompted to choose another one. Tap Done.

It's easy to customize your profile by selecting unique profile and header images, adding a name, bio, location, birth date, and website. You can also choose a theme color, and pin a Tweet that other people will see when they visit your profile.

  2. Go to your profile.
  3. Click or tap the Edit profile button and you’ll be able to edit your:

    • Profile photo (recommended dimensions are 400x400 pixels)
    • Name
    • Bio (maximum 160 characters)
    • Location
    • Website
    • Birth date (you’ll be able to choose who sees this information, but can only change the settings a few times.)
  4. Click or tap into any of these areas and make your changes.
  5. When changing a profile or header photo, click or tap the camera icon and select Upload photo or Remove.
  6. Click or tap Save.

Note: When you’re initially going through your profile set-up, you will not see the option to change your display name, until you have a profile and header photo uploaded.
