这是一首印度民谣，原自印度东北亚撒省（Assam）的格罗族（Garo tribe）。 亚撒省北邻喜马拉亚山脉，该省居民多数是山地原住民，其中三分之二居民信印度教，四分之一信回教。 格罗族中有许多人受宣教士感化成基督徒，但多数是信奉他们传统的宗教。
对格罗族民来讲，要跟随耶稣，许多人必须脱离家族亲人，放弃继承权，被社会摈弃，朋友鄙视。 要唱出：「我已经决定要跟随耶稣，永不回头。」走上这不归路，是需要无比的勇气。
1960年夏，浸信会全球大会时，一位来自亚撒省的代表，听到这首歌时，证实它是当地信徒决志时的宣告。
这首歌原文仅两节，1959年刊印在圣诗集时，由科拉克（John Clark）加上第三节，并由芮诺士配上和声。嗣后，庄逊（Norman E. Johnson），汤默士（Eugene Thomas），及巴乐斯（Cliff Barrows ）等各自将该曲调改编。
