The reason for this margin is to make all chart types compatible by aligning them so that they can be seamlessly combined.
If that gap wasn't there, a bar chart would bleed outside of the chart area, because the center of the bar is aligned with the tip of the area.
You can visualize this with the first bar in a bar chart. If you were to eliminate the gap on the left, the first bar would be partially outside of the chart area.

The only way to truly eliminate this gap is by making an X/Y chart. Because you are plotting the actual x-value of the point it can be flush against the axis. This however will prevent you from using any non-x/y charts (e.g., bar charts, gantt, etc.)
