Brexit: David Cameron to quit after UK votes to leave EU

Prime Minister David Cameron is to step down by October after the UK voted to leave the European Union.

1. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was "absolutely determined" to keep Scotland in the EU so a second Scottish independence referendum was now "highly likely".

2. But Boris Johnson, the ex-London mayor and public face of Vote Leave who is now a frontrunner to be next prime minister, said there was "no need for haste" about severing the UK's ties.

3. They also said they wanted to make immediate changes before the UK actually leaves the EU, such as curbing the power of EU judges and limiting the free movement of workers, potentially in breach of the UK's treaty obligations.

   curb 【kɜ:b】 限制,抑制

   treaty 【tri:ti】

4. Leave dismissed warnings from economists and international bodies about the economic impact of Brexit as "scaremongering" by a self-serving elite.

  1. to refuse to consider someone's idea, opinion etc, beacuse you think it is not serious, true or important.
  2. to remove someone from their job.

科普:从政治上看,其实是United Kingdom (缩写为UK),全称是The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland(大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国)。而UK之所以叫联合王国,因为ta不是一个孤零零的国家,而是由4个独立国家组成的:

  1. England(英格兰),首府London(伦敦)也是整个UK的首都;

  2. Scotland(苏格兰),首府Edinburgh(爱丁堡);

  3. Wales(威尔士),首府Cardiff(卡迪夫);

  4. Northern Irish(北爱尔兰),首府Belfast(贝尔法斯特)。
