Famous painting by Philipp Von Foltz of Pericles giving his Funeral Oration Speech during the Peloponnesian war.

                          (More information at http://www.emersonkent.com/speeches/pericles_funeral_oration.htm )

The leader of Athens at the time was Pericles. Pericles gave a speech at a funeral for some of the Athenian soldiers who died in the war against Sparta. This painting shows Pericles speaking at the funeral, in front of the Parthenon.

He used his “funeral oration” to explain why Athens is considered a true democracy, and that it was worth fighting for.
